A study published in May 2023 examined the differences between strawberries that received a treatment of CBD and those that did not, showing that it could extend the shelf life. While this research into CBD’s potential as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent is in its early stages, it has shown a positive impact and proved that it helped keep the strawberries fresher by a few days compared to those not given CBD.
The results showed a significantly delayed deterioration in weight loss, total acidity, pH, microbial activity, and antioxidant activity for coated strawberries compared to the control. The CBD-treated strawberries decayed far less over 15 days than those left uncoated, keeping their color and retaining their weight for longer. Higher amounts of CBD also seemed to perform better than lower amounts in the test.
While still early and possibly years away from widespread use, this is a positive step for the CBD and cannabis community. The more use for this product, the more likely we will see more federal funding and legalization.
