With the rising price of eggs and groceries, it’s a great time to start looking at raising chickens. Even better if you’re also growing cannabis in the backyard.
But why would you feed chickens cannabis?
Because a recent study found that cannabis-infused diets actually increase the chickens’ health.
In 2021, a cannabis farmer worked with a Thai university to study 1,000 chickens with cannabis mixed into their diet. For the study, the chickens were given leftover biomass from a nearby medical cannabis farmer. They used excess leaves, crushed into feed and boiled leaves for “marijuana water.”
The study found that the chickens given cannabis had higher quality meat and eggs, needed fewer antibiotics (sometimes none!), and was more resilient to harsh weather. These weed chickens are also sold for double the price on the market because of the antibiotic-free label attached to the meat.
Further studies are needed, but if the results are confirmed, cannabis could become essential for transforming the poultry industry!
