President Biden recently made history by signing a landmark marijuana research bill. It is the first marijuana reform bill to be passed by both chambers of Congress after it cleared the Senate last month via unanimous consent. This bill allows research universities and private companies – including those that receive federal funding– to acquire U.S. Drug
Enforcement Administration licenses to grow and handle cannabis for research purposes. This historic moment comes on the heels of Bidenʼsrequested rescheduling review, and this bill could directly and significantly impact that process.
The research bill is the first of several marijuana reform measures currently under consideration by this lame-duck Congress to reach the presidentʼsdesk.
Following the general research bill passing, a coalition of over 20 veterans service organizations(VSOs) has urged the passage of a marijuana and veterans research bill before the end of the session. This legislation has bilateral support: House – sponsored by Reps. Lou Correa (D-CA)and Peter Meijer (R-MI). Senate – led by Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT)and Dan Sullivan (R-AK).
The legislation cleared a House committee last year and has high hopes for passing this session.
