A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found evidence that recreationalmarijuana
legalization(RML) adoption is associated with small increases in adult employment in the agricultural sector. These
increases are consistent with the opening of new legal markets to produce and cultivate marijuana. Among early-adopting
states, California, Colorado, and Oregon all saw boosts in agriculture work.
This ¦nding goes directly against prohibitionist arguments that marijuana legalization harms the workforce.
Criminalization tends to actually hurt labor markets as strict policies prohibiting off-duty cannabis use by employers have
been linked to lower job pools for employers. Numerous businesses have begun amending their drug testing policies
amid the state legalization movement.
