Some 15 percent of cancer patients acknowledge consuming cannabis for symptom management, according to recent surveys.

The first study, published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics, surveyed nearly 2,500 patients receiving radiation for breast cancer. Fifteen percent of subjects acknowledged having used cannabis within the past 30 days. Patients most frequently endorsed using cannabis to treat insomnia, anxiety, and pain.

The second study, published in Cancer Research Communications, surveyed 934 patients diagnosed with various cancers. Just over 15 percent of respondents identified as current cannabis consumers. Patients most frequently reported consuming cannabis to mitigate pain, stress, and nausea and improve sleep and appetite. Cancer patients reported “moderate-high perceived effectiveness of cannabis-product use for symptom management.”

The surveys’ findings are consistent with other studies concluding that cancer patients often use cannabis to alleviate their symptoms. However, despite the growing use of marijuana among cancer patients, most oncologists report receiving no “formal training regarding medical cannabis.”

If you or you know a loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer and would like to seek cannabis products to alleviate symptoms, please speak to a Budtender about your ‘ideal dosage.’ You wouldn’t want to ingest a cannabis product with a low tolerance to THC; this can ruin your experience. Speaking to your medical provider and being completely honest about your usage is also essential.

When you or your loved one begins to try cannabis, it begins with how you would like to ingest cannabis. You can smoke it, eat it, rub it, vaporize it, drink it, etc. To find a product that can assist with low dosage, you might want to start in the edible section if you want to eat it. If you want to smoke it, ask about testing flowers or prerolls. Prerolls will make it easier for you to get right to it, and it comes in a convenient tube you can use to store the preroll if you don’t want to smoke it all in one sitting. Our stores have a vast selection of prerolls and preroll packs, such as Rio Vista Farms and Pacific Reserve products.

If you’d like to eat or drink it, our edibles selection contains products that have 5mg bites and 10mg bites. If you’d like a smaller dose, you can cut those bites in half to get half the dose. Edibles can come in chocolate, gummy, savory, and more. Regarding drinks, you can use the bottle cap from the Cannabis Beverage to measure your dose. Typically, a cap full is 10 mg of THC. We carry a variety of beverages, such as Fruit Punch by Happy Daze, Pink Lemonade by Don Primo, Apple Juice by Happy Daze, and more! Just ask your budtender about them!
