2022 was a record year for marijuana research, with over 4,300 studies published on marijuana and its components.

“We need more research” is easily one of the most common refrains from reform opponents, who insist that cannabis is
understudied even thoughitʼsone of the most frequently researched medical subjects. Scientistsʼ interest in studying
cannabis has increased exponentially in recent years bringing with it an increased understanding of the plant, its active
constituents, mechanisms of action, and effects on both the user and society.
Lawmakers and legalization advocates have continually supported expanded research into cannabis which won a major
victory this year with President Bidenʼshistoric marijuana research bill that will streamline studies moving forward.
“It is time for politicians and others to stop assessing cannabis through the lens ofʻwhatwe donʼtknowand instead start
engaging in evidence-based discussions about marijuanaand marijuana reform policies that are indicative of all that we
do know,”– NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano.
